EMA - California has been making the rounds on all the approved hipster channels. I've been trying to figure it out and I think I at least have a slight grasp on it.
I won't even pretend to understand the entire song. In a sense, it isn't supposed to make sense. It's a howl of obliteration.
The first lyric is the most powerful. It sets the tone and provides the context for the rest of the lyrics.
It's not about California actually making her boring. The usual spiel about a small town girl coming to LA and getting corrupted is boring.
The lyric can be better interpreted as "Fuck California. You made me feel like I'm boring," but it's not just a change in perception. She was never interesting to begin with. The ideals that she thought California represented were bullshit and they were always bullshit. It's not a song about loss. It's a song about never having.
Or it could be about SoCal. I mean that place like... totally sucks.
